William Edwards School

Personal Development

The Personal Development curriculum at William Edwards is broad and far-reaching.

PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education),  SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural education), British Values, and Sex and Relationships Education help to give students the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives. We aim to help pupils develop personally and socially, and tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that affect young people today. The curriculum equips pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. Pupils develop an understanding of global citizenship, economic wellbeing and how to make a positive contribution.

The delivery of the curriculum is via:

  • Weekly tutor time.
  • Taught timetabled lessons in some year groups.
  • Year specific focus days.
  • Monday Enrichment lessons
  • House and full school assemblies.
  • Integrated across the academic subjects.

All aspects of these teachings are taught as a spiral programme (the recurrence of themes throughout the year groups). With each delivery of the theme, the level of demand increases and learning is progressively deepened.

House Leaders play a crucial role in overseeing this provision and the topics we cover combine those provided by the PSHE Association as well as ones which meet the more specific and contextual needs of our pupils. The programme is reviewed regularly to ensure that we respond to any changing need among our pupils.
