William Edwards School

Student Leadership

At William Edwards student voice and leadership is valued. Students are given opportunities to take on leadership roles within houses and subject areas, helping to run clubs, provide events for primary school children, and take on roles such as sports captains and joining the Thurrock Youth Council. Students work alongside staff to deliver assemblies and other events linked to focus weeks such as anti-bullying week and Pride. Students also carry out events linked to the environment for science week, and participate in a diversity group who work with Mr O’Kill, the school’s Diversity Lead. Peer mentoring takes place for academic and wellbeing reasons, and there are specific groups of students who provide feedback on crucial school development areas such as safeguarding, special needs and PSHE/RSE. Tutor time provides an opportunity for students to work across the ager ranges collaboratively, feeding back their views to their House Leaders.

Student Executive is an opportunity for our oldest students to take real responsibility for role modelling and supporting other pupils. The selection process begins in Year 10, and the PowerPoint below outlines each step of the application process. Successful applicants remain in this role until they leave at the end of Year 11.

A significant proportion of pupils are proactive members of the school council, the school’s student executive group and the ‘pupils as listeners (PALs) group. These groups, alongside the head boy and head girl, act as positive role models to other pupils in the school
